Meet Miss Oshkosh

imageMy name is Tosha Herrman and I am honored to hold the title of Miss Oshkosh 2008. It has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl to walk down the runway balancing a crown on my head while holding a bundle full of beautiful roses to the song, “There She Is”; I wanted to be Miss America. Miss America represented everything I wanted to be: beautiful, intelligent, strong, an advocate, talented. Thanks to the Miss Oshkosh Scholarship Program, I am able to make my first steps toward this dream. I am excited for the year ahead of me. I have already had so many great opportunities and the memories will last a lifetime. If what I have experienced thus far is only the beginning of wonderful things to come, I cannot wait!

As part of the Miss America Organization (MAO), I have a personal platform which I am dedicated to helping: A-T Awareness and Research. AT stands for Ataxia Telangiectasia. It is a deadly genetic disease that affects children. Ataxia is the degenerative part that affects muscle control. Usually AT children end up in wheel chairs by age 10 and sadly, they usually do not survive past their teens. Right now there is no treatment and there is no cure. I have been fortunate enough to come to know two families in Oshkosh who are affected by this disease. Knowing their stories really helps fuel my fire to help fund research into this disease. They call it a orphan disease because only 1 in 40,000 children have it, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore it.

For the past couple of years I have been helping produce and host the AT Telethon "AT Children's Project" at UW Oshkosh. It is a 9 hour live broadcast, in which we have auction items and entertainment for the community to enjoy. My main goal is to expand the awareness of the "AT Children's Project".
