Meet Miss Oshkosh 2009

Chelsea Hammett - 2009 Miss Oshkosh

My name is Chelsea Hammett. I was born and raised in Oshkosh and attended Oshkosh West High School. I am honored to be holding the title of Miss Oshkosh 2009. I am very excited about the year ahead of me and I canít wait to get out into the community to meet people, assist in community projects and get information into the schools and community about my platform Suicide Awareness and Prevention. Dancing is one of my passions and I have been dancing for the past 16 years. I have been trained in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, Hard and Soft-Shoe Irish, Kickline and lyrical Ballet. I will perform an Irish Tap Dance for my talent at the Miss Wisconsin Pageant in June.

Thanks to the Miss Oshkosh Scholarship Program sponsored by the Womenís Division of Oshkosh Area, Inc. I have taken the first step toward becoming Miss America. In June I will compete in the Miss Wisconsin Pageant in Oshkosh which is the second step to fulfilling my dream.

As part of the Miss America program, we the contestants are raising money for the Childrenís Miracle Network and I will appreciate any money you wish to contribute toward my goal of $500.00. Please click here for more information.

As part of the Miss America Organization (MAO) my personal platform is Suicide Awareness and Prevention. I created my platform after I experienced a friendís death due to suicide. It is my goal to get the information into the community about suicide and what we can do to prevent it. I plan on teaching others about the warning signs of suicide, the ACT process and what they can do to help someone who may be thinking about suicide. The ACT process is a part of the SOS (Signs of Suicide) program currently being taught in schools.

ACT stands for:
A - Acknowledge that your friend has a problem.
C - Let that person know that you care about them.
T - Tell someone or an adult

I have spoken in freshmen classes at Oshkosh West High School about this ACT process and I plan on continuing to spread awareness about suicide and what we can do to prevent it in other schools and in the community.
