My name is Samantha Philip. I have lived 19 years in the wonderful city of Oshkosh, graduating from Valley Christian High School in 2010 and currently attending UW-Oshkosh as a sophomore.  It is such an honor to represent the city I have grown up in while getting to know the people of my community more personally. image

Even as a young girl I had wanted to be in a pageant such as Miss Oshkosh. This year I chose to take action and try to make a dream come true. What attracted me to the pageant was the opportunity it gave to the winner to speak about her passion. For several years now I have become passionate towards orphans because I had once been one. I was born in India, adopted as a baby, and then raised here as a citizen of America. I have been blessed beyond words with a life better than I could have asked for. I see my life as an example of what could be given to the millions of children around the world who are orphaned, needing a loving family to provide for their needs and most importantly giving them the much needed love and emotional security. I believe if you were to see with your own eyes the conditions some of these orphaned children have to endure, your heart would be changed. Having been blessed by adoption, I believe it is my responsibility to inform my community of the need and benefits there are in taking action and caring for the world’s orphans. It is my dream to see this country passionate about adopting children and seeing it not as a second resort to not being able to have children of their own, but choosing intentionally to care for a child’s life and well-being.image

Another passion of mine is music. As a child I loved to sing and my gift only progressed as I became older, becoming involved with my high school’s worship team and eventually becoming its leader. I was involved in musical theater as well as national vocal competitions, determined to use my talent in any way I could. I was blessed with so much opportunity to sing that I developed stage confidence as a result, as well as a desire to further my talent and perhaps form a career in music and the arts.

I would like to thank the Women’s Division of Oshkosh for believing in the Miss Oshkosh Organization and sponsoring the opportunity given to young women like myself to further education, become a role model, and develop passion. It is such an honor to know that people believe I am capable of making a difference, and to be given a chance like this is more than I could ever ask for. image

I also want to thank every individual involved in the Miss Oshkosh Organization for all the wonderful support that I have received since day one. Your passion for this scholarship program is such a blessing and I cannot put into words how thankful I am to be provided with such caring people in my life.

And to my friends, family and supporters who have encouraged me from the beginning to take part in this pageant, believing that I was capable of handling the responsibility as Miss Oshkosh – it is your words, your encouragement, and your prayers that kept me going. Without you, I would not be where I am. With all of my heart, thank you.

Samantha's Farewell:

On the night of March 3, 2012 I was crowned Miss Oshkosh and from that moment on, my life has changed for the better. I clearly remember that evening of the pageant and how my confidence shot sky high after I’d read this passage of the Bible:

Isaiah 41:9  “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am you God.”

This verse means the world to me because it speaks such truth about my life. I was born in India and placed in an orphanage as a baby. God truly blessed me through the process of adoption and by giving me the opportunity to be raised by loving parents in the great city of Oshkosh. It all began with my incredibly selfless and caring family, including my also adopted brother, Joshua, and I have them to thank for the life I’ve had that led to becoming Miss Oshkosh. This is the story God has given me to inspire those around me to care for every child in need of a loving home and a life filled with opportunity.

I live to encourage and motivate the people in my life to live with purpose and be the best they can be, and the Miss Oshkosh organization has given me the wings I so desperately needed to reach a wider audience. I’d like to thank the numerous amounts of people who took the time to get to know me and valued my words by letting me speak at events around the city. You have allowed me to live with purpose and that is something I will always cherish.

The Women’s Division is simply remarkable. These ladies give their time and energy to putting together events to raise funds that provide scholarship money to all of the competing contestants. I cannot thank you enough for contributing to my education at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Your selflessness and passion is truly inspiring!

During my reign I’ve been blessed with so many generous men and women who have taken care of each and every one of my ‘Miss Oshkosh needs’. I’d like to thank Patti Karlgaard and her magic fingers for altering the MANY dresses that were too big for me! To Dave Alban and Meg, each dress you made for me was simply beautiful and I thank you for always using colors that complimented my skin tone so well! To Jerry Oswald, the brilliant photographer, thank you for the magnificent pictures you’ve taken of me. Your talent is incredible, especially how you make an awkward pose look downright beautiful on camera! To the beautiful ladies at A Cut Above, you always make me feel so welcomed and I thank you for taking the time to do my hair and nails so wonderfully! There are so many others who have made this past year incredible and I can’t thank them enough for their kindness. Just know that each of you inspire me to always give when I have something to give, and to never hold back when given the chance to change a life. You have all changed mine!

I consider these next three ladies to be angels in my life. I’m so blessed to have even met them, let alone had the chance to spend a whole year getting to know them and receiving such care and love! To Gert, Gordy and Marilyn, you three are such beautiful women that I will always cherish. From the day I became Miss Oshkosh you have always been there for me and provided me with everything I’ve needed and more! You three are family to me and saying “thank you” just isn’t enough. I pray that God blesses you for all the time you spend caring for all the ladies that come through the Miss Oshkosh pageant. You are truly inspiring and I will always remember all that you’ve blessed me with!

My friends and family are so important to me and I’d like to thank all of you for taking an interest in my life and what I’ve been able to accomplish as Miss Oshkosh. It brings me great joy to be able to share my experiences with you and I’m thankful for all the encouragement and support I’ve received throughout the year.

And to the next young lady that is crowned Miss Oshkosh 2013, know that you will be loved and taken care of. This next year will change your life and the things you learn and experience will be special. Doors will open for you and I encourage you to take every opportunity you get to inspire and encourage those around you. You represent this wonderful city of Oshkosh. Make us proud and let it be confirmed in your soul that you are beautiful, smart, talented and capable of changing the world you live in!

With Love,
Samantha Philip, Miss Oshkosh 2012
